    ABS using PLA cartridge

Hi all, I am new to the forum. I'd like to be able to use ABS, however I only have 2 PLA cartridges, and am afraid it will clog the heads if I stick ABS in the PLA cartridge.

    1) Has anyone figured out a way to trick the cube into using ABS in a PLA cartridge?
2)Is there a hack for the chip?
3)Is the only way to buy a cartridge with an ABS chip?

I tried a few things but nothing seems to work.

Let me know your thoughts =]

    Thank you

    Hi,

I don't know much about the cube 3 specifically (I usually print on RepRaps) but I here's my take on it:

    - yea don't put ABS filament in the printer and try to run it with a cube3 file made for PLA, I don't think any good will come of it. Probably nothing actually as the nozzle will not get hot enough to extrude the ABS properly

    - You can try to change the temperature in the .cube3 file directly so it will melt the ABS enough and print properly, people do it to use non PLA/ABS filaments. I've never done it myself. Also there are other things you may have to mess with (e.g. retraction length and print speed) that I'm sure someone more versed than I can help with. See this thread: http://www.print3dforum.com/showthre...perature+gcode

    - I know there is a hack to 'refill' the chip, but it's obsolete now that the firmware hack is here. Here's a link to the refill thing http://www.print3dforum.com/showthre...ubeX-and-Cube3
    and also this site http://www.haxtom.com/?p=1
Maybe you it can be hacked to change to ABS...?

    - Probably getting an ABS chip would be the easiest haha, yea it costs money off ebay but you save in filament! Or post here http://www.print3dforum.com/showthre...cartridge+chip

...it seems my forum sleuthing does come in handy haha...

    Nice scouring the forum, MR.

However, I would personally put the chip hack above the FW hack. <= (worthless opinion)

Chip hacks will let you upgrade your FW on the fly unless 3DS puts a irreversible magic block into the FW. <= (intentionally vague)

But yes, temperature modifier cranked up 30*C is the 1st place to go. Free if you can get the rhythm of doing this down. I got lost at step 2 of 20-someodd. <= (facetious)

I went the route of just buying the ABS carts but I have a business requirement to do so. ($)

I have all the bits for the chip hack but no time to devote to it. Not too swift at programming from a USB port either.
However, using a DOS window is second nature for me. I'll get it done one day.

Hey, thank you for that information. I hear you, purchasing an ABS cartridge would be my easiest option, I was just looking for something as easy as the filament firmware hack. I will take a look at the cube3 file you mentioned, because I actually didnt know it was even possible to mess with the settings..

    Thank you again.

    Hey,
Thanks for sharing. I hear you. I went ahead and just purchased an ABS cartridge, as changing the temperature settings was a bit of a hassle. That's awesome dude. I would totally donate some $$ (or bitcoin/Ethereum) for your efforts. I think you'd be doing everyone who owns a cube 3 a massive solid. I wish I had the tools/time to hack the chip, because I'd certainly do it.

    @KHMM

    I second TD's recommendation for Tomuro's ReCube solution - I'm a happy customer!

In return for a donation (it was worth $25 to me - was that enough?) he has provided a 'Lite' solution including the schematic, parts list and Arduino code and basic instructions.
This allows setting the material type and color, and the % remaining.
If you've done any breadboarding, it is quite simple to put the parts together. Here's what my rig looks like:

    HaxTom.com cube cartridge writer.jpg

The tricky part for me was making a good connection to the chip contacts. I printed a hub gadget to fit the cartridge and attached pieces of the spring from a ballpoint pen. It has worked quite well.

Further, in response to my plea, Tom created a 'Pro' Recube version which enabled me to convert all my Ekocycle cartridges to Cube 3 cartridges! (That was well worth another donation!) I did this so that I can run the Cube3 firmware on my Ekocycle (identical other than the firmware) printer.

I am also using the Cube3 firmware filament hack - per the local thread by that name - so I don't have to repeatedly reprogram the cartridge '% remaining amount'.

Two brilliant solutions to an unnecessary problem plaguing a discontinued but very viable printer! (In my opinion...
