    I've had problems trying to pull filament after installing one of these: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:670689 to print ninjaflex (worked a treat!).
    As you mentioned, the filament tends to get a blob on the end that's bigger than 1.75mm, causing a jam when retracting. I found that extruding 50mm or so of filament first before (immediately) retracting the filament stopped this blob from forming.

    No, I have a piece of foam in that space holding it in place.
    I don't have anything on my machine that isn't necessary....
